Other students choose their major simply because they enjoy the subject material. By sampling courses from different departments, you can get a better idea which field you are most comfortable in. The most popular college major is business administration, split evenly between men and women. On the other hand, men make up the vast majority of computer science and engineering majors. For women, the fields of education, English and liberal arts dominate the list.

You don't have to be currently enrolled in a degree program in order to sign up for online courses. Students can participate in group discussions with a live professor via Google Hangouts, a free video-conferencing application that you can access via gmail. If you so choose, online education gives you the opportunity to take difficult courses that won't show up on your transcript. Alternatively, you may be able to complete online credits for a grade. Advanced Placement exams (AP Exams) are offered in a variety of subjects, offering college credit for classes that you have taken. Test yourself with free practice exams, before visiting the College Board website to register to take your actual AP Tests. Technical Degree Programs

The Department of Labor reports that new graduates with technical degrees are likely to find employment faster, including majors in computer programming, small business administration, health care, and graphic design. An associates degree is a two-year program that either results in an Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree. Careers that require an associates degree include becoming a dental assistant, occupational or physical therapy assistant, or licensed practical nurse (LPN). The single greatest downside to an associates degrees in the job market is that you will be competing with individuals holding bachelor's degrees. Therefore, make sure you're highly skilled in the niche you've chosen.

After several years in the workforce, the key is to focus on your technical skill set and build up a portfolio of your work. Candidates with prior industry experience are preferred by interviewers, but an applicant's past experience must be relevant to the particular job vacancy that the company needs to fill. Your resume must show a clear pattern of numeric success over time. Companies frequently publish rankings, offer various awards and incentives, and conduct monthly reviews of employee performance.

The main challenge in getting your degree is to choose a career that you will be able to pursue for many years. The job vacancies for website designers are still increasing, as retail firms move a greater percentage of their business online. Also, as the healthcare industry relies heavily on electronic medical records in order to protect patients' personal data.

There is indeed a shortage of nurses, but the education required is very demanding. Community colleges offer an Associate of Science degree in Nursing, and some diploma programs also award certificates in practical nursing. Nurse training is a function of your ability to learn, and whether you choose to attend nursing school full-time or part-time. Deciding whether to get an associates degree or a bachelors degree should depend on your career goals and anticipated budget.

Nursing & Medical Job Listings

Earning a CNA degree (Certified Nursing Assistant) is the first step towards becoming a fully-qualified nurse. Most CNA programs can be completed within a few months, allowing you to join the workforce quickly. The next step in a nursing career is to become a LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) or LVN ( Licensed Vocational Nurse). These are year-long programs, in which you'll work under an RN distributing meds, treating wounds, and providing basic patient care.

Students will receive classroom instruction and clinical training in a hospital setting. A 4-year BSN program allows students to further specialize in the areas of pediatrics, geriatrics and mental health. After completing your nursing education, you must be licensed by the state in which you'll be practicing, given that state boards of nursing each have specific certification requirements.
